ロンゴロンゴ。イースター島の絵文字。
未だに完全な解読はなされていないが、
象形文字の見た目から、文章は、
奇数行と偶数行を交互に、木版を
百八十度反転させながら、
刻んであることがわかっている。
由来も不詳だが、インダス文字同源説、
漢字同源説、エトルリア文字同源説、
インカ文明以前の絵文字説、
宇宙起源説などがある。
現存する最長の文は、通称
　「サンティアゴの杖」
と呼ばれるアーティファクトにあるもので、
一八七〇年にチリ海軍が入手した
長さ五フィート、重量五ポンドほどの
この木製の王の錫杖には、
二千三百二十文字が彫り込まれている。

　inscribed on a wooden tablet, etc..
　Often used attributively (rongorongo script;
　rongorongo lunar calender.)
　Every other line of rongorongo appears
　upside down; this appearance makes
　a reader rotate a tablet (or inscribed object)
　180 degrees at the end of each line.
　The inscription of rongorongo had already
　become obsolete before the westernized time.
　The longest survived inscription is called
　"Santiago Staff," which was acquired by
　the Chilean navy in 1870, from a French colonist
　Dutro-Bornier, who claimed that it had been owned
　by an ariki (king). On this wooden scepter,
　5 feet long and weighing about 5 pounds,
　there are 2,320 glyphs inscribed.
　The rongorongo has not
　been deciphered, yet.
