　serpentine verse をあえて日本語に訳すとすると、「蛇詩、蛇行」となる。この言葉は始まりと終わりが同じ単語の詩を指す。例えば、オーストラリアの詩人ローソン (Henry Lawson, 1867 - 1922) が書いた以下のような文は蛇行といえる。

Beer makes you feel the way you ought to feel without beer. 

　serpent verse と呼ばれるこの詩形は、蛇が自らの尻尾をくわえている様子を暗示している。蛇の頭がその尾につながる図は永遠を象徴する。

　アイルランド出身のジョイス (James Joyce, 1882-1941) の『ユリシーズ (Ulysses)』には次のような文が見つかる。

Love loves to love love.

　上の文は love に始まり、love で終わる。
