Because It’s There
The height of Mount Everest is 8,848m, but it was not certain in the early 20th century. After the 1st World War, the British Empire, the war debtor, was falling while the United States, the war creditor, was rising in economy with technology innovations. The victory couldn’t keep the prestige of the empire, which was turning into the Commonwealth. The cruel & savage mass destruction war empowered the working class, purifying demcracy, but it also formed the lost generation of heart-broken young people, who had actually experienced battles in the war. Britain needed challengers in the 1920s. & there were the challengers, who wanted to climb Mt. Everest whose Tibetan name is Chomolungma “the Goddess of Earth” & Nepali name is Sagarmatha “the head of the Great Sky or the Summit of the World.” No one achieved at the peak of it then, & no one knew even the acurate height. One of the expedition mountaineers was George Mallory, who was asked in a lecture at New York by a reporter why he wanted to ascend the highest mountain of the world. He answered:
Because it’s there.

They found a route to a higher location at the 1st expedition, & then, found a further path, & they were finally approaching the peak in the 3rd attempt, but it is thought that they couldn’t touch the summit. Their ambitions and motivations were succeeded to the next generation mountaineers, however.
