ETYMOLOGY

In 1980,  the term retronym was first printed as a neologism coined by Frank Mankiewicz, an American journalist and former president of National Public Radio. The prefix, adjective, & noun retro- comes via French from Latin “back; backward,” & the noun-forming suffix -onym comes from Greek ὄνυμα “name; word.”

MEANING & USE

A name for distinguishing an older or original thing to a newer one:
  Film camera is a retronym. The term became necessary as digital cameras emerged, requiring a way to distinguish traditional film-based cameras from their digital counterparts…

NOTE

The name of an original thing had been called by its own name without a modifier until the newer version of the thing appeared. CAMERA, for example, was called CAMERA without any modifier such as FILM, before the concept of the digital camera was created. Retronyms & names of newer things need modifiers to distinguish one from the other.

レトロニムとは、修飾語を伴って旧式のものや原型を説明する名前。例えば、デジタルカメラが発明されまで、カメラは「カメラ」と呼ばれていたが、デジタルカメラ出現後は、新しい技術のカメラと区別するために「フィルムカメラ」と呼ばれるようになった。この「フィルムカメラ」のような言葉をレトロニムという。

周囲を見渡すと例はたくさん見つかる。

　ギター　→　エレキギター発明後に「アコースティックギター」というレトロニムができた。

　電話　→　携帯電話が発明されると、家・店・オフィスなどに設置されていて持ち運びしない電話は「固定電話」というレトロニムで呼ばれるようになった。

レトロニムは、実のところ、レトロニムという用語がフランク・マンキウィッツによって造語される前から存在していた。

English　→　英国が北米やインドに植民地を作ると、 American English  や Indian English が発生して、発祥地の英語は、 British English というレトロニムで呼ばれるようになった。
