In the 20th century, dystopia appeared, meaning an “imaginary worst state.” The word dystopia was coined as the antonym for utopia with the classical Greek elements:

dys (δυσ-) , “bad” opposed to eu-. (U- of Utopia & eu- are the same sound.)
topos (τόπος), “place” (cognate with topic.)

-ia, forming a name of a state or country, e.g. Austria, Australia, mania, hysteria.

無視する」をディスるなどというが、

これとは語源が異なる。

ディスるは disrespect から。

ディストピアのディスは

例えば、

dysphemism

に見ることができる。

euphemism 

が「遠回しで上品な言い方」

なのに対して、

dysphemism 

は「あからさまで下品な言い方」

eu- は dys- の対義語で、

「よい」を指し、

なおかつ、Utopia の U と同音。

1975, Ecotopia appeared in the English history as a name for a fictional country considered ideal for ecologists, that was created by American novelist Ernest Callenbach for his novel Ecotopia (subtitle: The Notebooks and Reports of William Weston.) Ecotopia is a portmanteau word that packages 2 words Ecologist & Utopia. Callenbach’s Ecotopia is on the Pacific north-west coast consisting of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, independent from the United States in the near future in his novel.

Later, in generalized use, an ecotopia is an “ideal place or social system for ecologists.” This place name is sometimes used to apply the real north-west coast of the United States.

In the late 20th century, Ecotopian also appeared in the English vocabulary: “citizen in Ecotopia of Callenbach or any ecotopia; environmental idealist.” 

In adjective use: “of ecotopia; imagined by an ecotopian.”

小説のタイトルとして出現した。

エコロジストとユートピアの

二語から成るこのかばん語は

「エコロジストのユートピア」

を示している。

造語された当初は

作中の架空の国名であったが、

やがて一般化して、

「環境保護家の理想郷」

を指すようになった。

エコトピアはしばしば

実際の米西海岸地帯を

指すことがある。
