Let Their Dreams Come True

George Herman Ruth Jr. (1895-1948) had grown up in a reformatory & orphanage, St. Mary Industrial School for Boys, from 1902, his age of 7, to 1914, his age of 19, the year when he joined a professional baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. Just after he entered the MLB, his teammates teasingly nicknamed him “Babe,” because his unworldly behaviors impressed them that he was wild, innocent, & charming, like a baby. Hot dogs & beer, some say, generated Ruth’s energy to make his history.  His lifetime ERA is 2.28, & his hitting average, .342, & he won 94 games as a pitcher & hit 714 home runs as a slugger, leaving a lot of legends in the baseball history, & then, entered the Hall of Fame. He had not only physical skills, but brilliant spirituality. That’s why baseball fans love him still now. But you should notice a point that baseball fans are beer lovers, too. Here is Ruth's reflection:

Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

ジョージ・ハーマン・ルース・ジュニアは一九〇二年の七歳から、プロ野球のホルティモア・オリオールズに入る一九一四年の十九の年まで、孤児院のセント・メアリー少年訓練学校で育った。MLBに入るとすぐ、赤ん坊のように、素のままで無邪気で愛嬌のあるルースは、その世慣れない振る舞いが印象的だったので、チームメイトたちはからかって「赤ちゃん」と渾名した。ホットドッグとビールがルースの活力源であった、という説がある。その生涯防御率は二・二八、打率三割四分二厘、投手として九十四勝して、スラッガーとして七百十四本のホームランを打ち、数々の伝説をのこして、殿堂入りした。ルースには肉体的な能力だけでなくすばらしい精神性もあった。だから、野球ファンは今も彼を愛している。しかし、野球ファンもまたビール好きだ、という点を押さえておかなければならない。ベーブ・ルースの考えはこうだ。

自分が飲むビールの影響を熟考していると、時々恥ずかしくなってしまうことがある。そんなときはグラスの中を見つめ、ビール工場で働く人たちや彼らの夢と希望を考えるようにしている。もしもおれがこのビールを飲まなかったら、ビール工場の人たちは失業してしまい、夢も閉ざされてしまうに違いない。「このビールを飲んで彼らの夢を叶えさせることは、わがままに自分の肝臓の心配をすることよりもいいことなのだ」とおれは思う。
