ETYMOLOGY
In the late 19th century, the past participle of wake became the adjective, meaning “not asleep,” chiefly in African American Vernacular English, & then, the word has got to be used in figurative ways.
In 2008, the politically figurative use of the term got popularized by the refrain “I stay woke” of a song called Master Teacher created & played by an American song-writer Erykah Badu.

woke は wake の過去分詞。「起こされた = 起きている」
woke が形容詞の働きをするようになったのは19世紀末の米国で、アフリカ系アメリカ人が使い出した。身体・肉体の状態を表す際は「起きている。睡眠の状態にない」ことだが、すぐに比喩的用法もできた。特に政治と社会の仕組みがどうなっているのかに「気づいた」人々や、そういった人々の思想・観念などを形容するのに woke は使われている。
2008年には米国のシンガー・ソング・ライターであるエリカ・バドゥが『マスター・ティーチャー』の歌詞の中に I stay woke をリフレインとして歌うと、たちまち、 woke は認知されるようになった。
しかし、保守派の中には woke movements に反感を抱く人々もいて、この単語は蔑視的用法でも使用されている。
日本語はウォークの語形で借用している。
格差是正が必要だと訴えたり、ジェンダー平等論を唱えつつも、実際には本腰を入れてその実現のために行動していない企業・個人が存在する状況をウォーク・ウォッシングという。
強固な保守派対ウォーク派の対立では、例えば、LGBTQ+問題ひとつをとってみても、容易に分かりあえるものではないので、根が深い。保守派は、神が造ったのはアダムとイブだけだから、世の中には男と女しかいないと言い張り、ウォーク派は、性はもっと多様だ、と言い張る。
