No Frigate Like a Book
Emily Dickinson (1830-86), American poet, highly honored after her death, was reading books and writing to someone or herself, & composing poems in her life. She was writing after reading & reading after writing everyday. “My hair is bold like the chestnut burr; and my eyes, like the sherry in the glass that the guest leaves” is her self portrait. She says in her poem that a book is the best vehicle to travel:
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!
死後に高く評価されるようになったアメリカの詩人エミリー・ディキンソンは、読書をして、相手がいてもいなくても手紙を書き、詩作して、人生を過ごした。読んでは書き、書いては読む毎日である。「髪の毛は栗のいがのようにちくちくしていて、目は客の飲み残しのグラスのシェリーみたい」というのがエミリーの自画像である。彼女は詩の中で旅をするのに最適な乗り物は本であるといっている。
本よりも素早く導く船はなし、
あっという間に諸々の国。
どんな駿馬もかなわない、
駆け抜ける詩歌のページに。
このじぐざぐ道は貧しくても辿れ得る、
通行料など心配無用。
とてもお得な、
人の心を運ぶ馬車。
