podzol

podzol --- 土壌学用語。日本語では「灰白土」という。英単語の語源はロシア語。  под (pod) は「下 (under)」を指し、 зола (zola) 「灰 (ash)」を指す。従って、字義は「灰の下」となる。

　シベリアやアラスカなどの亜寒帯の針葉樹の森や低木 (ヒース) の荒野の土は表層が灰のように白く、酸性であり、鉱物や塩基は溶けて深層に流れ落ちて集積するため、生産性は低い。深層の土壌は物質が沈殿して暗褐色になっている。

　ロシア語の под (pod) は英単語 foot と同じ印欧祖語 *ped- 「あし (foot)」から派生してできた単語である。
