Stones Move and Trees Speak

Karma may be one of the themes for Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Monotheists believe that God sees everything as the Japanese say that the sun sees everything. In other words, heaven & nature witness crime & testify against criminals. It is the universal law of mankind that a criminal must be judged for their crime. At Act 3 Scene 4, Macbeth fears that his crime will be unveiled, remembering some superstitions that nature can expose human crime:

It will have blood; they say, blood will have blood:
Stones have been known to move and trees to speak;
Augurs and understood relations have
By magot-pies and choughs and rooks brought forth
The secret'st man of blood.

因果応報はシェイクスピアの『マクベス』の主題のひとつにちがいない。日本人がお天道様はお見通しだというように、一神教の信者は神はすべてをお見通しだと信じている。別な言葉でいえば、天と自然は犯罪を目撃していて、犯罪者に不利な証言をするということだ。(日本には、天網恢々疎にして漏らさずということわざもある。)　つみびとはその罪の故に裁かれなければならないというのは、人類の普遍の掟なのだ。第三幕第四場でマクベスは、自然が人間の犯罪を暴き出すこともあるという迷信を思い出して、自分の罪が明かされるのではないかと怯えている。

石も動くことは知られているし、木も話すという。

兆しと承知されたる関連性が、

かささぎやべにはしがらすやみやまがらすを使って、

謎に包まれた真犯人を示したこともあるのだ。
