Work With Your Enemy

Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa, who organized Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the nation), the armed wing of the African National Congress. After their sabotage campaigns failed to change the White domination as the governmental policy, they started to fight against apartheid by arms. The guerilla war began in 1961 that was operated in their own rule that no one would be injured or killed (the revolution, however, produced many casualties later). They blasted official buildings that were considered symbolic for the racial segregation. In 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested & imprisoned, & then, he thought there deeply what a true democratic society must be. In his conclusion, like the ideal of the French Revolution, it needs equal opportunity & harmony. He once said:
If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.
敵と争うのをやめたいなら、敵と一緒に働かなくてはならい。そうすれば、敵は相棒となる。
(ネルソン・マンデラ)
