米国建国の父にして第四代大統領ジェイムズ・マディソンの政治思想。

もしも人が天使だったなら、政府は無用となっていただろう。

James Madison (1751-1836), one of the Founding Fathers of the United States & the 4th President (1809-1817), had a political reflection:

If men were angels, no government would be necessary.

人の性は生まれながらに善でできていると孟子は考えていたが、マディソンは天使だったらと仮定しているから、性善説とは逆の、荀子の説いた性悪説に似た思想を有していたといえる。
