tetchy は touchy と、音においてよく似ていて、意味においては、形容詞「すぐに怒る」で同じである。おそらくスコットランド方言の tache 「しみ、よごれ、吹き出物、きず、欠点、汚点」と語源的には繋がるだろう。 tetchy や tache はは古仏語 teche 「傷、汚点」に遡り、更に俗ラテン語からゴート語に遡る。


英語の初出はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』第一幕第三場で乳母がジュリエットの乳離れを思い出して語るところにある。
