Listen to a calm sea sing!

Henry Major Tomlinson (1873-1958), UK writer, who loved the sea, wrote in Some Hints for Those About to Travel (1923):
Most of us, I suppose, are a little nervous of the sea. No matter what its smiles may be, we doubt its friendliness. It is about as friendly as the volcano which is benign while it does not feel like blowing up. What draws us to the sea is the light over it. Try listening, in perfect safety, to combers breaking among the reefs on a dark night, and then say whether you enjoy the voice of great waters.
