古英語期の形容詞 non / nan は ne an "not one" からで、none と同源であり、中英語期の一一三一年以前から語尾の -n が子音の前で消失し始め、最終的には母音の前でも消え去って no の形となった。古英語 an は不定冠詞 a / an や one の先祖でもある。
副詞・間投詞は ne a "not ever" からできている。名詞は副詞からの機能派生で、他の品詞と同様の意義を示すが、具体的には「反対票、反対者」と和訳できることもある。
