大渦巻、大混乱、喧騒。
固有名詞ではモスケンの渦潮のこと。

　Maelstrom is basically the name of
　a very powerful whirlpool off the west coast of
　Norway which was supposed to suck in all vessels
　that passed within a wide radius.
　大渦潮 (Maelstrom) とは、本来、
　ノルウェー西海岸沖の猛烈な渦潮の名称であり、
　その周辺の広大な海域を通過する船舶を
　呑み込んでしまうと信じられていた。

　Poe's story is about an old man who tells

　his brothers were caught in the maelstrom
