バンジージャンプ。
バヌアツのペンテコスト島が発祥地か。
木材でタワーを造り、その上から、
足首に蔓を巻き付けて、頭から飛び降りる。
高さは二十五メートルほどで、下は地面である。
この行事をナゴールという。
ヤムイモの豊作祈願の意味合いがあったようだが、
そればかりではない。男たちはどの年代でも
ジャンプするが、飛び降りられるようになると、
大人の一員として認められるようになる。
勇気のない者は大人にはなれない。
「バンジー」は、一説には、
ニュージーランドの俗語で
　「弾力性のある紐」
からきた言葉だという。

　and jump off it toward the ground
　headfirst. When a young man tries to leap
　and makes the first success,
　people will regard him as an adult.
