インターネット上で配信されている音声ファイル。
ポッドキャストは、アップルが
ITMS (iTunes Music Store) に
専門のカテゴリーを設けた
二〇〇五年六月からブレイクした。
iPod と「放送 (broadcasting)」の合成語で、
ジャーナリストのハマーズリーの造語。
新オックスフォード米語辞典は、
二〇〇五年の流行語大賞にこの単語を選んだ。

音声ファイルのプロデューサーはインターネット上に、
製作したファイル (通例、mp3形式) を保存する。
リスナーはそのデジタルコンテンツを iTunesなどの
ソフトを使ってダウンロードし、コンピュータ上、
または、iPod などに転送・転写して聴く。
当初は音声だけであったが、時をおかずして、
動画の配信者も現れ、
　「ビデオキャスト (videocast)」
なる新語も生み出された。
