太字体、ゴシック体、太字の文。
英国では一六〇〇年代から、印刷で
使用されるようになり、
ローマン体と区別して、
　「黒い字体」
と呼ぶようになった。
ドイツ語圏の印刷物では、
今でもしばしば用いられている。
「太字の印刷物」の意は十九世紀から。
